Development of disaster information management system in Lao PDR • DesInventar methodology initiated by UNDP and UNISDR in Lao PDR since 2005 • A tested disaster information management system (DesInventar) implemented in Sayaboury province in 2008-2010 • Training on DesInventar • Training on historical data collection and use • Standard data collection formats developed • Training on disaster information management system • Guideline for disaster information and communication system in Lao PDR developed • A National Risk Profile of Lao PDR developed in 2010 • Hazard assessment and hazard mapping carried out based on historic disaster events • Additional capacity building support from UN-ISDR GAR in systematic evidence based disaster database and data collection from provinces in 2010-2011 • Training on historical data collection and use • Data collection from provinces • Training on DesInventar • National disaster database developed at NDMO

Development of disaster information management system in Lao PDR (Cont.) • Training on database development for Lao government using DesInventar system by UNDP in early 2012 • Strengthening Institutional Capacity for the Development of Lao PDR National Assessment Report (LNAR-2012) on Disaster Risk Reduction • Establishment of TWG • Disaster data collection template reviewed and standardized with the guideline • Capacity of key persons from national line ministries and provinces increased through • Training on evidence based historic disaster data collection • Training on data analysis • Disaster data collected from 17 provinces in Lao PDR • Data entry and analysis with the support from UNISDR • National disaster database system established at NDMO and made available on-line • Lao PDR national assessment report on disaster risk reduction (LNAR-2012) developed in line with the GAR-13

Lao PDR National Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction 2012: Linkages between Poverty and Disaster Risk (LNAR-2012) Objectives: • To present current status of disaster risks in Lao PDR • To establish a relationship between disaster risk and poverty reduction • To guide the stakeholder in Lao PDR in mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into poverty reduction strategies and programs • To contribute to the Global Assessment Report (GAR)-2013

Conclusion and Recommendation The Lao PDR National Assessment Report (LNAR) for Disaster Risk Reduction is an attempt to create more awareness on the overall disaster risks in the country and the impact of the disaster risk on poverty. Some of the initial recommendations are: • Improvement of Disaster Data Collection • Institutional Strengthening for Comprehensive Risk Assessment • Capacity Building for Probabilistic Risk Assessment • Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction into Poverty Reduction Strategies in Lao PDR
