  1. Energy & Heat

  2. The energizer bunny has a lot of energy! But what does that mean? • Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. • Now that you know the definition of energy, what are some things that have energy? • Wind - Batteries • People - Light • Sun - Nuclear Power Plants • Vehicles - Food

  3. Energy • When an object or organism does work on an object, some of its energy is transferred. So think of work as a transfer of energy. • The object upon which the work is donegains the energy. • Energy is measure in joules.

  4. Kinds of Energy • 1) Kinetic Energy – energy in motion. • Kinetic comes from the Greek word kinetos, which means moving. • This is energy at work so energy is being transferred. • 2) Potential Energy- energy that is stored. • Has the potential to do work

  5. Different Forms of Energy • Mechanical – energy associated with the motion or position of an object. • Can be kinetic or potential

  6. Forms of Energy • Thermal energy– the total energy of particles in an object. • When thermal energy increases the particles move faster, making it feel warmto touch. • Why does it feel warm?

  7. Forms of Energy • Chemical energy – potential energy stored in chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together. • Examples: Chocolate, wood, wax • Chemical energy is even stored in the cells in your body.

  8. Forms of Energy • Electrical Energy- moving electric charges produces electricity.

  9. Forms of Energy • Electromagnetic energy- is the light you see everyday. • Travels in waves

  10. Forms of Energy • Nuclear Energy- potential energy stored in the core, or nucleus, of an atom. • One kind of reaction occurs when a nucleus splits • Nuclear fission • Used to produce electricity • Another kind occurs when nuclei join together • Nuclear fusion • Occurs in the sun and other stars

  11. Review • Are energy and work the same thing? Explain. • How are kinetic and potential energy different? • List the forms of energy and give an example of each and a non-example.
