Happiness level / Research Question • Turkey ranked medium-low on the level of happiness (WVS, 2004). • Are income, education, religion, family, friend, leisure, health state, number of children, age, marital status, and employment status associated with the feeling of happiness among the Turkish population? • Controlling for importance of religion, importance of family in life, health state, gender, importance of friend, being proud of nationality, marital status, employment status , importance of leisure, education level , we expect that income level is positively correlated with feeling of happiness.

Background Info\Lit Review • Happiness is the favorable judgment of individuals about their quality of lives as a whole (Ahnetl 2004). • employment, income, leisure activities, family among other factors are associated with people’s satisfaction and happiness (Andrews and Withey 1976; Argyle 1989; Vermunt et al. 1989; Veenhoven 1996; Kousha and Mohseni1997). • Peggy Shyns (1998) investigates level of life satisfaction and happiness across countries. Economic Prosperity and Happiness is associated • Hamid Reza Alavi (2007) studies the correlation between religion and happiness.

Data • taken from 2007 World Value Survey • 7684 individuals interviewed, which is a nationally representative and reliable data • 3,847 (50 %) men, 3,837 (50%) women • ages 17 to 91 average age 36.64 years. • High response rate: Reliable and Valid to make inferences about the population • observation for income: 3194 individual with 4490 missing

  9. Conclusions/Policy Suggestions • As income increases from low to high there is a 15% more likelihood that individuals will feel happy. • Turkey needs to close the income gap across its population in order to influence happiness.
