INTRODUCTION • NATS is licensed to carry out the AIS function on behalf of the UK CAA. • INTEGRATED AERONAUTICAL INFORMATION PACKAGE (IAIP) of which NOTAM is just one element • Satisfy International requirements for the exchange of aeronautical information of a lasting character essential to air navigation (ICAO Annex 15 SARPS) • An AIS shall ensure that aeronautical information is made available in a form suitable for allthose involved in flights ops, flight crews, flight planning, simulators, air traffic units - UK & overseas

  3. TRADITIONAL NOTAM • AIS information (not just NOTAM) is disseminated by the International community. The structure and content must conform to specific standards. • TODAY: The wholecommunity is still using NOTAM based on a system created 60 years ago, using loosely constructed free text messages. Primarily used for delivery over AFTN. • There are some NOTAM that cannot be graphically portrayed at all ! e.g. FIR, Communications, AIS, Triggers, ATCC, ACFT Entry requirements.

  4. THE WAY FORWARD – Machine readable NOTAM • Reliance on Automation, brings demands for high quality Information & Data • XNOTAM - a radical change. Data set in structured format, fully interpreted by automated system. • GEO REFERENCED • TEMPORAL • LINKED TO STATIC DATA • QUERY ENABLED • BACKWARD COMPATIBLE

IMPLEMENTATION • To implement XNOTAM, a comprehensive computer model for aeronautical information is needed. • EUROCONTROL - Second XNOTAM trial Autumn 2008 • Working toward operational implementation, proposed to start by 2010 • NATS is currently on a development path to implement AIXM model which will provide XNOTAM capability • More information www.aixm.aero

  7. NOTAM STATISTICS (AUGUST 2008) • Worldwide average 20,000NOTAM in force at any one time • UK NOTAM Issued this year Over 21,000 • Average number of briefings (PIB) produced on the AIS web site 1337 per day
