Military Junta • Myanmar is ruled by a military junta • Regime is very oppressive • During protest marches in 2007 several civilians were killed including monks • Regime moved capital from Rangoon to Naypyidaw in 2006 • Regime is extremely corrupt, brutal and oppressive • Myanmar is perhaps the most isolated country in the world due to the regime’s skepticism of outsiders
Devastation • Cyclone Nargis swept through the region, killing at least 120,000 people in 2008 • The cyclone left millions of survivors homeless • The many millions were unable to get the necessary help due to the regimes reluctance to allow foreign aid and workers enter the country • As a result of this, thousands more died, causing increased tension between the people and the military government
Economy & Natural Resources • Rich reserves of oil, natural gas, marble, lead, limestone, timber etc • Resources are not being utilized to its potential because of corruption and mismanagement • Inefficiency because of resistance towards foreign investments • Does not have the necessary technological education and equipment to handle its potential • As a result, the people of Myanmar suffers in extreme poverty
The People of Myanmar • Myanmar is divided into states and divisions • Minorities have seven states, while the Burman majority (60%) are divided into divisions • There are 11 minorities, such as the Thai, the Karen and the Mon. They live in the Shan, Karen and Mon states (p 362 in textbook) • Other states are Kayah, Kachin, Chin and Rakhine • Division are Sagaing, Magway, Mandalay, Bago, Ayerarwardy, Tanintharyi, Yangon,
