How To Write A Document – Based Question (DBQ) Essay • Step 1: Identify the tasks and write them on the graphic organizer • Step 2: Answer the short – answer questions for the documents • Step 3: Plug your answers from the documents into your graphic organizer to support your tasks • Step 4: Use the graphic organizer as a guide to write your essay.

  2. Expectations when writing your D.B.Q.’s You WILL… • Use citations, tell what document you got the information from. In document 1… or at the end of a sentence (doc. 1). • Always add Outside information (underline/circle) Benjamin Franklin or Benjamin Franklin

  3. Expectations when writing your D.B.Q.’s You will NOT… • Say in your essay “I will explain”… or “in this essay”… • Copy the documents word for word • Just explain what is each document • Use texting words/symbols (+, &, lol, omg)

  4. Historical Context REWORDEDThis means you cannot copy the historical context or change only a few words. You MUST make this opening paragraph totally your own wording.(4-5 sentences)

  5. Second Paragraph (from Task 1)Support the topic sentence in Task 1 with the appropriate documents.(4-5 sentences)

  6. Third Paragraph (from Task 2)Support the topic sentence in Task 2 with the appropriate documents.(4-5 sentences)

  7. Fourth Paragraph – Conclusion Summarize what the essay was about.(4-5 sentences)Other options for your conclusion include:1. Use and explain a quotation that has to do with the topic 2. Evoke a vivid image3. Universalize (compare to other situations)4. Suggest results or consequences
