ELA • Teach students to write in order to express opinions and persuade while using relevant evidence for support. Move away from writing solely to convey experience. • Make a dramatic shift in the direction towards informational text. Have students read deeper into text and use text evidence to make inferences rather than regurgitating facts or simply retelling plot details. • Ensure that grammar instruction needs to focus on overall communication skills of students. Students need to be able to write and speak clearly. • Involve all students 2x a quarter in close reading at the high end of their grade text level range.
Math • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Students should explain how they found their answer and defend their methods. • Build math vocabulary in the early grades--teachers should be speaking using content vocabulary 2 years in advance of their grade level • Shift to relevant problem-based mathematics
General • Rely on formative assessment to inform instruction • Teach students to work independently • Teach students how to use available resources • Ensure that students use digital resources routinely • Institute vertical and grade-level collaboration • Remember the focal point of CC is the instruction of science and math through literacy • Provide all students with a robust curriculum of instructional units specifically articulated to the CCSS
