Special Education and EL Strategies Goal #1: Increase Academic Achievement High academic standards to prepare all students for college and career. • Improve the quality of services and programming for students with disabilities. • Improve the quality and type of language acquisition supports and services for all language learners.

Our EL Community • 7,070 students representing 29.4% of the district enrollment • 1,248 new students enrolled this year • Students with interrupted formal schooling • HS: 117, MS: 61, ES: 59 • 898 students - 12.7% of ELs dually identified • 32 Home Languages • 87% Spanish, 8% English, • 1% Arabic, Cambodian, Creole, Portuguese, Swahili • 85 Birth Countries • 50% US, 27% DR, 13% Guatemala, • 1% Honduras, Liberia, Nigeria, Syria, El Salvador, Haiti
Vision and Policy • Develop an updated vision and mission to drive the work. • Partner with students, families, staff and community organizations. • Promote a culture that values multilingualism and multiculturalism. • Develop a plan to message to the broader community. • Develop policy to articulate core practices. The vision of the Office of English Learners is to ensure that English Learners have meaningful access to rigorous instruction, materials, and academic choices within the Providence Public Schools. We will ensure equity for English Learners while maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity.
High Quality Services • Personalization for all students. • Implement academic strategies across content. • Focus on standards-based instruction and language rich environments. • Ensure appropriate service delivery.
Build Internal Capacity • Collaborate across the Teaching and Learning Division. • Instructional rounds • Keys for Learning • EL strategies in all classrooms • Collaborate with HR on ESL certification. • Utilize EL data management system. • Implement screener at registration center.
Bilingualism and Biliteracy • Expanded Dual Language to Carl Lauro and Spaziano. • Increase Seal of Biliteracy. • Design DL implementation plan for 6-12. • Spanish for Heritage Speakers in 6-8 at Nathanael Greene. • Culturally relevant materials and resources.

Build Capacity • Maximize all team members to work in a strength-based model. • Serve as coaches/consultants not service providers. • Provide more inclusive opportunities for student empowerment.
Engage Families • Provide culturally responsive opportunities for families to participate. • Ensure families’ voices are heard in a variety of ways. • Ensure families understand their rights, opportunities, and how to advocate appropriately.
