  1. Introduction • My son Tommy went to Jefferson, Parras, RUHS where I’m proud to say he was on the Academic Decathlon team. He graduated from UCLA with a double major. He works in Culver City helping homeless people find jobs and housing.  • My husband Steve went to Art Center. He illustrates children's books. He likes to help teach my students learn to draw when he has time.  • This is my 28th year of teaching in Redondo Beach. I have taught ¾,3, 4, 7, and 8th grades. I love teaching and having fun with my students. In my free time I like to travel, golf, and read. 

  2. Welcome to Room 5 • My goal this year is to help your children have a happy, safe, successful and educational year of growth. Students in Room 5 can enjoy FLEX seating options which include; yoga balls, the reading corner, partner tables (big enough to accommodate 2 chrome books) and carpet squares to sit outside and enjoy our shade tree). 3rd grade is a big transition year. I am always here to help and support your child. If your child has trouble with classwork, homework or any other issues write me a note in their agenda, or you can always email me at cgray@rbusd.org. I will answer your email within the school day.

  3. Room 5 Expectations • Students should try to be as prepared as possible with their agenda, homework assignments and chromebooks charged and ready to learn. • Students should have a chapter book to read during SSR. • Students should speak kindly to others and follow directions. • Students will “pull a card” if they are disturbing the class or not following classroom and school rules. If their card gets pulled twice they lose 5 minutes of recess. • Students who complete all of their homework earn a trip to the treasure box. • Students will receive a birthday Smencil from me  Summer birthday will receive their pencil in June.  • PLEASE bring your child directly to Room 5 on RAINY Days! We like to enjoy our comfortable room instead of the noisy cafeteria.

  5. Homework • Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday. • Homework is math workbook pages and 1 other assignment. • The math will be a review of the day’s lesson. Other homework will be spelling , reading comprehension, science or social studies. • Homework should be written in your child’s agenda. The agenda is an important tool that goes back and forth from home to school everyday. It is an important way for us to communicate.

  6. Chromebooks • It is important for chromebooks to have a full charge everyday. We use our chromebooks a lot! • Please provide a working pair of headphones and or earbuds. • Chromebook help can be found at the RBUSD website under the IT tab. • Students will be required to print some of their Google Docs or Google slides this year. Again, help with printing issues can be found at the RBUSD website. • Your child’s chromebook is brand new and will remain with them until they go to Parras. They will be collected at the end of this school year and returned at the beginning of 4th grade. I recommend getting the school district’s insurance in case anything goes wrong or gets broken. Lost chargers will need to be replaced. • Most importantly, Leave ALL of the factory settings in place. Any changes may negatively affect your child’s test scores in the spring.

  7. Writer’s Workshop • Directions for decorating the student notebook are in your folder. • We will be writing the following genres; Personal Narratives, Realistic Fiction, Opinion Letters, and Fantasy. • Writer’s Workshop is a fun personalized program that my student’s really enjoy 

  8. Current events • Current events will be due once a month beginning in October and continuing through May. I have placed a hard copy of the instructions in your folder. • We will do most of the research in class using sites such as dogo news and time for kids. • Check my website at RBUSD for due dates.

  9. Projects • We complete most of our projects such as book reports, posters, and group projects in the classroom. You will be asked to print some google docs at home because I have very limited amounts of printing here at school. • In the spring I will send home the guidelines for a Redondo Beach Brochure project and an Indian Dwelling.

  10. Third Grade areas of study • Reading and Listening to stories and chapter books on CD.
