EXAMPLE (a) Jo wants to choose 10 children from a group of 100 children. She puts all their names in a hat and picks out 10 names. Write down the type of sampling method Jo is using. Random Sampling (1 mark) (b) A children’s athletic club has 300 members. The table shows the number of members in each age group. Total = 300 Ciaran wants a stratified sample of 25 members. Calculate the number of members that he should choose from each age group. Under 11yrs = 4 = 3.75 x 25 Under 11yrs = 11 - 12yrs = 6 Sample must be whole numbers and add to make 25 = 6.5 x 25 11 - 12yrs = = 8 x 25 13 - 14yrs = 13 - 14yrs = 8 = 6.75 x 25 15yrs and over = 15yrs and over = 7 (3 marks)

Write down the numbers from each category that they should sample. (3 marks) (b) Give one other factor they should take into account when selecting the sample to ensure an unbiased sample. (1 mark)

The table shows the number of people in each age group who watched a synchronised swimming event. PLENARY ACTIVITY – CROSS CURRICULAR (OLYMPICS) Total = 900 A survey uses a stratified sample of 50 spectators. Work out the number from each age group in the sample. = 4.8 0 - 16yrs = 0 - 16yrs = 5 x 50 = 6.8 x 50 17 - 29yrs = 17 - 29yrs = 7 = 20.2 x 50 30 - 44yrs = 30 - 44yrs = 20 Sample must be whole numbers and add to make 50 = 15.2 x 50 45 - 59yrs = 45 - 59yrs = 15 = 2.9 x 50 60+yrs = 45 - 59yrs = 3
