This project explores the integration of service learning & social media in a Quality Management course for Health Information Management students. Students develop PI plans, engage with healthcare community providers, & utilize social media for remote collaboration. Unexpected gains include enhanced leadership & communication skills. Future integration includes continued collaboration with service learning sites, exploring more social media tools, and educating students on service learning courses.

Student Learning Outcomes • Develop organization-wide health record documentation guidelines. • Maintain organizational compliance with regulations and standards such as Joint Commission, CARF, and COP. • Ensure organizational survey readiness for accreditation, licensing, and/or certification process. • Analyze clinical data for a disease management process such as case management. • Apply patient and organizational safety initiatives such as programs and plans of a healthcare organization’s environment of care. • To engage students in the health care community through public service to understand the significance of service learning and gain a further understanding of the course content. • To gain an understanding of how social media such as Face Time and Skype will allow students to communicate on their projects remotely.
Course Service Learning Project Group Project: Performance Improvement (PI)Plan Students were given an “opportunity for improvement issue” and had to develop a PI plan to correct the issue. Upon completion of plan, student had to present their plan to members of the service learning site, course instructor and department head.
Successes – Expected Gains Further understanding of course content and a broader appreciation the Health Information Management profession through service learning. Increase classroom participation, attendance, and retention. Gain an understanding of how social media tools can be used to work on group projects remotely. Increased teaching resources
Successes - Unexpected Gains • Create a community connection with businesses within the community • Improved skills in the areas of leadership, decision-making, and communication skills
Knowledge Gained For Future Integration • Continue to work with the SL sites to gain a better understanding of the concept of SL and assist in identifying their needs that relate to the SL courses which in turn will enhance projects and assignments at the sites. • Explore additional social media tools to enhance student working relationships and communication with group projects. • Educate students on SL courses prior to course registration.
