Some tips… • Boots? Yes, please!...to avoid undesired… ! Fabio? • Wind, currents, °C…! • Look at the weather • Look at yellow flashing lights! A storm is coming! YCC - Windsurf Courses
Be kind…. • If you are practicing on Thursday or during courses that are not yours….share the boards • IF YOU BREAK SOMETHING…WE DO NOT CHARGE YOU(it happens also to the best ones…) BUT PLEASE: • INSPECT YOUR EQUIPMENT BEFORE STORING/USING IT! • REPORT ANY BREAK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! • DO NOT SURF WITH BROKEN EQUIPMENT!!!! Does and Don’ts • boards and sails are fragile... • please do handle them with care! (do not throw the boards on the ground...) • golden rule: when you rig/unrig your sail, you should NOT be facing the wind • while (un)rigging, keep the sail down on the ground • sail flipping in the wind is bound to break! • sails left on the beach can fly away... • attach it to the board (or something else...) • while rolling back your sail, start from the top and roll it tight • if it does not fit easily in the bag, do not force it... roll it again! Courses and wind YCC - Windsurf Courses
Steering 1.Center of Effort (CE): where all the force of the wind is centered. 2.Center of lateral resistance (CLR): where all of the sideways motion of the board may be thought to be concentrated.. These centers are important. When these points are in the same vertical line, the board will not turn YCC - Windsurf Courses
Steering See the movie HighResSteering.mov YCC - Windsurf Courses
Tacking and Gybing The clew turns over the stern (back) of the board The clew turns over the bow (nose) of the board YCC - Windsurf Courses
Tacking YCC - Windsurf Courses
Gybing • Remember: • Tilt the sail forward • Feet: 1 step backward • Mast&sail: forward…more • Do not open too much the sail… YCC - Windsurf Courses

Priority Rules byThierry YCC - Windsurf Courses
A typical situation… • Where is the wind coming from? • Who is port who, is starboard? • Who is leeward, who is windward? • Are we on the same course? • ……………………….CRASH……………………. YCC - Windsurf Courses
Rule n.1 Avoid collisions at all costs even if you have right of way and the other rider refuses to yield. This is the most important rule and overules all others in dangerous situations! YCC - Windsurf Courses
Crossing situations! • NO crossing = NO problem! • Possible crossing situations: • Wind-surfs on OPPOSITE TACKS • Wind-surfs on the SAME TACK • Wind-surfs vs. OTHERS YCC - Windsurf Courses
1. WS on opposite tacks • “Starboard” tackers have RIGHT of way • I am a starboard tacker if: • My RIGHT hand is close to the mast (easy!) • The wind is coming from the RIGHT (easy!) • The starboard side of the board is windward (…?...) Wind PORT TACKER STARBOARD TACKER YCC - Windsurf Courses
2. WS on the same tack • “Leeward” boards haveRIGHT of way • I am a leeward board if: • I am sailing upwind • I am further from the wind • A special case: when 2 WS are sailing on the SAME course, the SLOWEST has right of way Wind WINDWARDBOARD LEEWARD BOARD YCC - Windsurf Courses
3. WS vs. others • WS vs. other sailing vessels SAME AS ABOVE • WS vs. motorboats PRIORITY • WS vs. rowing boats NO PRIORITY • WS vs. public transport (CGN) NO PRIORITY • WS vs. professionals (fishermen) NO PRIORITY YCC - Windsurf Courses
Windsurf SafetyBy (Katarzyna) Stefano YCC - Windsurf Courses
Safety rules • Check material (and alert for malfunctions) • Check the local wind/weather forecast • Leave a message where you are going (never too far) and when you will be back (never too late) • Never sail alone • Wear wetsuit and life jacket • Observe priority rules (keep clear of steamers and beware swimmers!) • Generally sail upwind; avoid off-shore winds and bad visibility • Never too tired, never too cold YCC - Windsurf Courses
Help and self-rescue Golden rule:never leave the board! YCC - Windsurf Courses
Help and self-rescue 1. The rig (sailing, boom and lines) is lowered and either laid on the back of the board or rolled tightly and laid on the center of the board. In winds greater than 3 knots, always roll the mast, sail and boom and secure tightly with the uphaul line. 2. If the board has a centerboard or daggerboard, pull it out and wedge it between the mast and the boom. 3. Lay on the board in the prone position, facing forward, and paddle to shore if you are confident you can make it. 4. Always aim upwind or up current to where you want to land. YCC - Windsurf Courses
Help and self-rescue Light winds rescue (up to 3 knots) YCC - Windsurf Courses
