WHERE Should We GoWith Graduation?
We Want Your Feedback!! • Please go to the following link and provide us with feedback/suggestions • http://todaysmeet.com/BCGradprogram
Grad Consultation: What We Heard • Increase attention to cross-curricular competencies – make them visible components of the grad requirements • Provide greater flexibility and opportunities for learning in non-traditional pathways • Increase emphasis on planning to support: • Community and workplace connections while in school • Transitions to workplace and further education and training • Identify core learning common for every graduate, while increasing opportunities for personalization • Reduce the scope of provincial assessment/ Increase support for local assessment • Do something about Grade 10 • Improve curriculum support for First Nations and diversity education
How might the New Grad Requirements • Organize around a comprehensive Graduation Learning Plan (GLP)? • Increase opportunities for transition preparation and community learning experiences? • Balance cross-curricular competencies and discipline-specific content? • Content = Discipline Competencies + Discipline Knowledge • Reduce the emphasis on specific grade levels (10, 11, 12)? • Repurpose Grade 10 (more planning, fewer mandatory outcomes, remove provincial exams)?
Graduation Learning Plan... How might it? • Be student-developed? • family, community support • guided by educators (mentors/advisors) • annual reflection • Include required core and elective learning? • Link to community and workplace learning? • Emphasize student exploration of areas of interest (Elective Learning)? • Career and post-secondary pathways • Certificates and specializations (AP, IB, trades) • Shape a final culminating assessment/presentation?
Competencies – How do we make sure they come to the forefront? Consistent with strategic directions: • Cross-curricular competencies required (currently in development): • Personal and Social Responsibility • Thinking • Communication • Multiple ways for students to acquire and demonstrate competency development and content knowledge • Emphasis on authentic, community-based learning
Discipline-Specific Content & Elective Provincial Curricula • Discipline-specific content required, organized as sets of learning standards within the following disciplines: • Literacy • Numeracy • Arts/Fine Arts • Natural Sciences • Social Sciences • Applied Skills • Healthy Living • Aboriginal Culture and History • Provincial curricula for specific elective content
Assessment • Provincial assessment limited to literacy and numeracy? • Not combined with classroom assessment • Pass based on mastery (threshold TBD) • Taken when ready, and taken again • Providing performance standards, rubrics or other tools for: • Required Learning? • Cross-curricular competencies • Discipline-specific knowledge and competencies • (Possibly) Elective learning? • Assessing transition activities identified in the GLP? • Increasing the use of authentic approaches to assessment and reporting?
Communicating Student Learning(Reporting) Assessment consistent with personalized learning principles: • Flexible, authentic, ongoing, transparent, standards-based How can we have a transcript that identifies: • Alternatives to credits and courses? Examples • Outcomes met? • Core, majors, minors? • External certifications? • WHMIS, CPR, FoodSafe • Provincial assessment results? • Final project results?
Diploma (Dogwood) Should we have... • One set of graduation requirements leading to a single Dogwood Diploma? • Requirements are common • Evidence sources may vary • Possible Exception? • School Leaving (Evergreen) Certificate available for small number of students • Program details on transcript and GLP?
