  3. Paul’s plan to save them, Ga.5:10-26 1. 10a, by expressing confidence • Paul is not compromising his message • He gives them something to live up to • Six words: • “You can do better than that”

  4. 2. 10b, by stating consequences • To bear the judgment is to pay the penalty • Paul acts as OT prophet • Whoever he is – “This means you!” • Make sure you’re right before you go ahead! • Judaizers “more strict than Paul” • Mt.15 • Dt.4:2; Rv.22:18

  5. 3. 11-12, by forcing a conclusion • 11, that which causes offense or revulsion and results in opposition, disapproval, or hostility, fault, stain • People want to fit in • 12, shows how serious is this crime of destroying souls!

  6. 4. 13-26, by showing choices • 13, freedom is not a license to sin • This is a “free country” • Opportunity, occasion, pretext, for the flesh (16, 19-21) • We must choose: perverted liberty that emphasizes flesh, or love that serves

  7. “Love” • 14, love is not Hollywood’s lust • Synonym of service (13) • “Love” is comprehensive. Mt.7:12 • 15, bite, devour (as wild animals) • Natural result of choosing the flesh, 16 (the opposite of love)

  8. Only two choices (16) • Walk in the Spirit • Walk in lust of the flesh • 17, flesh vs spirit = civil war in body; tug of war in the heart • Self-denial • 18, led by Spirit (= 16) • Not under law is not absolute (6:2) • Love produces more obedience than law

  9. The Flesh, 19-21 • Not a comprehensive list (v.21): • And the like… “And the things like these . . . It is not meant to be exhaustive, but it is representative” • Such things… expects readers to know other sins that belong in list The Spirit, 22-23 • Love, as v.14, contrasts with immoral “love” (v.19)

  10. IIPrinciples To Guide Our Decisions • When in doubt, throw it out! Ro.14:1-5, 22-23 • Lawful is not enough. 1 Co.6:12a • It is legal to smoke, drink, practice immorality, and have an abortion, but . . . • It is lawful to eat meat, but wrong to act in a way that leads other people into sin

  11. 3. I want to be free! 1 Co.6:12b • Addictions to nicotine, alcohol, drugs, pleasures, etc. • A priceless loan. 1 Co.6:19-20 – Do yourself no harm 5. Self-government won’t work w/o self-discipline. 1 Co.8:9

  12. 6. A strict constructionist 1 Co.10:23 • Edify, a building term • Construction requires skill; destruction does not • Construction takes work; destruction is relatively easy • Christians build up brethren 7. Spiritual 911 • What may I do to save you? • 1 Co.10:27-30

Ps.101:3 • Television is an invention that permits you to be entertained in your living room by people you would not have in your home (David Frost) • Only 700 people (writers, producers and actors) produce 75% of all TV programming • Lichter-Rothman survey: 86% never or seldom attend a church or synagogue; 84% say government should make no laws regarding sex; 95% believe homosexuality is not wrong

Ga.5:19 • Porn- originally, writing about porneia; now, of writings, pictures, etc. designed to arouse sexual desire • Mt.5:28
