  3. NORTHEAST REGION Over Next 300 yrs. Colonists brought in 3 million slaves from Africa. Today this area is strongly impacted by African culture.

  4. SERTAO REGION Inland from the Northeast Region Also known as the interior plateau Tropical wet-dry climate, oftern has drought for more than a year

  5. NORTHEAST REGION Poverty is very high in this region Many children suffer from malnutrition Life expectancy is only 49 years in the region Wages are very low compared to the Southeast Region

  6. SOUTHEAST REGION Smallest region of Brazil but home to 40% of the population Subtropical climate and good soil Great for Cash crops: cotton, sugar cane, rice and cacao

  7. SOUTHEAST REGION Coffee is the most important crop People migrated from all over to work coffee business Today the “World’s Coffee Pot” Growing ________ of world supply

  8. SOUTHEAST REGION Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the two major cities Large beautiful cities draw many from rural areas Pull factors:

  9. FAVELAS Slum communities Houses usually built on hillsides out of wood planks, mud, tin cans, iron scraps and anything else that can be found All Brazilian cities have Favelas

  10. CARNIVAL Famous festival in Rio Takes place the 4 days before Lent- a period of 40 days of fasting before Easter A year of planning leads up to the event Brazilians take part in dance competitions and perform the Samba-national dance

  11. BRAZILIAN HIGHLANDS North of Southeast Region Located on Central plateau and home to capital city of Brasilia 1956 Brasilia was built hoping to draw people into the interior of the country

  12. AMAZON RIVER BASIN Largest and least explored region Covers more than half the country About 80 inches of rain per year and the growing season never ends Home to thousands of species of plants and animals

  13. AMAZON INDIANS 10% of the population 200,000 Indians from 180 tribes 1500’s there were 2 to 5 million Indians Many died from being killed by settlers or new diseases

  14. PANARA TRIBE As expansion came to Brazil technology crossed paths with the Panara Tribe For the first time the outside world came in contact with the Panara Tribe and the tribe was devastated. In 2000 the government was forced to compensate the Panara Reservations have been set up to help the tribes. Others say reservations are bad.
