Dr Faustus Dualities
Conflicts • Dr Faustus is a play which explores and portrays the conflict of everyman. These conflicts are explored through a series of dualities represented through characters and themes. • The play was written and performed during a time of unrest and political and religious change.
The soul • The Elizabethans viewed the soul from two theological standpoints. • Manichean – Dualism • Augustine - Unitary
Manichean • Dualism • Good and evil spirits combine in the soul, both need to be identified. Evil can never be fully eradicated as this makes no existential sense. • Good and evil are not involved in a struggle – but in a balance. • Spiritual world of light • Material world of darkness
Augustine • Unitary • Rejects evil as an entity as its presence thus implies that God is has the potential to be evil. • Life is measured in the distance away from evil and the move towards goodness.
