Childhood • Exact birth is not known • Estimated to be born in 1880 • Rumors that it was on a plantation in Georgia
Early Accomplishments • Began his career as an accomplice to Father Jehovia in 1899 • He was the founded of an important religious group • In early years was inspired by Christian Science and New Thought • Later on split from father Jehovia and rose to be the leader of the Peace Mission in 1912 • Lived in New York near Brooklyn and later moved to Long Island, an all white area
Popularity growing.. • In 1931 white neighbors complained about large meetings taking place at Divine’s house • Arrested & incarcerated for 30 days • Judge who sentenced him died two days after Father Divine was in prison • He believed the lord was intervening and God’s wrath would come upon “wrongdoers”
