Expectations of Qualitative Researchers and the Problem of Access Entering a field in qualitative is more difficult then quantitative. It requires a closer view like if you want to conduct an interview then you have to be very close to the participants as compared to simply hand over a questionnaire. As an observer you normally have to come in the field for a long period.
Field In general term it means a certain institution, a subculture, a family, specific group of persons with special biography, decision makers in administrations or enterprises. You have to be careful in maintaining the collaboration of the participants in your study . How do you achieve their willingness, concrete interviews and other data.
Role Definitions in Entering an Open Field You and participants are very important. You, participants and your communicative competencies are the main instruments for collecting data. Can’t be a neutral person. Take position and role.
interact with members chicago school Observe members Participate with members
Investigated participants extential sociology Good faith membership Ethno methodology Membership Role Peripheral members Active member Complete member
At one pole , they position the studied of Chicago school and their use of pure observations of members in a field of open and well directed intraction with them and of active participation in their every day life. At the other pole, the concern of recent ethno methodology is with describing members methods rather then their perspective in order to describe the process under study from the insides.
Stick in both cases with their objective Some times does not show the actual look by the researcher to find the insight data like in case of drugs
Access to Institutions Institution like consulting servicers Person responsibility for authorizing the research Level of those to be interviewed and their time & willingness Research request This procedure becomes routine and is called “Work of Agreement” the main task is the negotiation of common linguistic b/w researcher and participants
Wolff(2004a)summarizes the problems of entering institutions as are search field as follows: 1. Research is always an intervention in to a social system. 2. Research is a disruptive factor for the system to be studied to which it reacts defensively. 3. A mutual opacity exists between the research project and the social system to Be researched. 4 .To exchange a whole mass of information on entering the research field Does not reduce the opacity .Rather, it leads to increasing complexity y in the Process of agreement and may lead to increased "immune reactions. "On Both sides, myths are produced ,which are fed by increased exchange e of information .
5.Instead of mutual understanding at the moment of entry, one should strive for An agreement as a process. 6 .Data protection is necessary, but may contribute to increased complexity in the Process of agreement. 7 .The field discovers it self when the research project enters the scene(e.g., the Limits of a social system are perceived). 8.The research project can not offer any thing to the social system. At most, it can Be functional .The researcher should take care not to make promises about the Use fullness s of the research for the social system. 9.The social system has no real reasons for rejecting the research.
Access to Individuals After getting access to the institution you need to get access to individual But how…..? Either need experience person or trained person. Trained person having no experienced have lot of time but….
Case study 1 Reservations against Research Methods Permission for interview Different reservations in different methods Consoler reservation about time, fear of indiscrete question Routine recording and listening & watching For specific person it is difficult to find him Advertisement, news channel, TV commercial, media Snowball =e.g. friends of friends
Strangeness and Familiarity Professional stranger
