  1. Student Leadership at Oldfields School Presented by: Parnell Hagerman and Trish Cox

  2. School Theme: • Soaring to the top: Women in leadership • All school read for the summer (several options on women in leadership both fiction and non-fiction • Advisory groups research and present a female leader to the school • All school assemblies- featuring women in education, business, science, etc.

  3. What makes our leadership program unique? • Leadership is not optional in the senior year • Leadership opportunities are shared amongst all seniors • Seniors have the opportunity to tell us where they want to lead- select options

  4. The ideal leadership program: • Will be different for every school • Should reflect the school’s mission • Should start as early as possible- 8th through 12th grade • Should be inclusive- not just for obvious leaders • Should be student centered • Should foster a greater sense of community • Should be incorporated into the whole school • Should be fluid and open to change- keep evaluating so positions fit the student’s strengths.

  5. The process • Begin early. • Start talking about leadership with your younger students. • Give your students a voice. • They will be more invested in leadership if they help develop it. • Prepare them. • Be ready to tell them what the leadership job entails, don’t just throw them out there to sink or swim. • Support them. • Pay attention to what is happening and listen to them.

  6. Creative leadership • Attendance taker • Study hall proctor • Big sister • Team captain • Dinner table head • Social activities committee head
