Introduction • How do I prepare myself for advanced courses? What are the skills that are necessary for success in high school and then eventually college? • You will research important study and time management skills from literacy centers on major college campuses. • Your research will lead you to the completion of a final product.
Task • Your task is to create a student learning center regarding research in the best practices for college success. Source: Winebrenner, S. 2001
Resources • Upper St. Clair High School: • http://webinfo.uscsd.k12.pa.us/_schoolwires/highschool/pdf/StudySkills.pdf • Cornell University: • http://lsc.cornell.edu/Sidebars/Study_Skills_Resources/SKResources.html • Princeton University: • http://www.princeton.edu/mcgraw/library/for-students/extracurricular-skills/ • University of Minnesota: • http://www.studygs.net/shared/mgmnt.htm • Darmouth: • http://www.dartmouth.edu/~acskills/handouts.html#Reading
Process-Research • Access each of the following sites for recommendations on success in high school and college: Upper St. Clair High School: http://webinfo.uscsd.k12.pa.us/_schoolwires/highschool/pdf/StudySkills.pdf Cornell University: http://lsc.cornell.edu/Sidebars/Study_Skills_Resources/SKResources.html Princeton University: http://www.princeton.edu/mcgraw/library/for-students/extracurricular-skills/ University of Minnesota: http://www.studygs.net/shared/mgmnt.htm Darmouth: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~acskills/handouts.html#Reading
Process-Note taking • Take NOTES with lots of details regarding the recommendations: • What does each site say about notetaking? • How does reading comprehension effect high school/college success? • What about time management? • What about research projects? • What type of writing tips are offered? • What about test preparation? • Where should you go if you need additional help? • What about study groups? • How do you think this relates to your current practices?
Process-Summarizing • Summarize all of your notes into categories. Some suggestions: • Reading Comprehension • Note taking • Time Management • Project Planning and Management • Test Preparation and Strategies
Process-Product-Student made Learning Center • You will use your research, notes, and categories to create a Student Made Learning Center for PreAP/AP students to utilize at Klein Forest. • Using your categories, you will create an interactive display with puzzles, games, and activities for Klein Forest students to use to assist them with high school and college academic success. • Find or make pictures, diagrams, photos, charts and tips to decorate the learning center. • You will present your learning center to your Summer SOAR class.
Evaluation-Rubric Your Summer SOAR teacher will provide you with a copy of your rubric. Source: Westphal, L. 2007
Conclusion • Great job on working toward academic success this summer! Not only have you researched what it takes to succeed in high school and college, but you have also assisted Klein Forest Golden Eagles as well!!!
