Surface Water • Any water that stays on the surface of the ground without soaking into it. • Runoff is an example of surface water • Water that travels downhill • Eventually forms streams and rivers
Effect on land forming • Delta – landform that is made when a river meets a still body of water • Flowing water can erode land in one location and dump sediments in another. The soil in this area will be nutrient rich and GREAT for vegetation!
Watershed / Drainage Basin • An area of land that is drained by a river • All water that organisms need is supplied here • Divide – the high ground between two drainage basins/watersheds Ex: Mountain range
Groundwater • Water that soaks into the ground. • It is naturally purified as it soaks through the soil layers. • Zones of Aeration and Saturation – soil and rock has pores (permeable)
Pathway of Groundwater Falls as precipitation (rain) Zone of Aeration (no water in soil pores) Reaches bedrock (not permeable) – no pores Soil above bedrock becomes saturated (Zone of Saturation) – has pores Top of the zone of saturation === WATER TABLE – measure ground water here
