These deposits, discovered in the 1950s, were one of the biggest in the world. Soon they set up sulphur mines in Piaseczno (it worked in the years 1952-1972) and in Machów (1962-1992). The story of the discoverer, professor StanisławPawłowski, and sulphur mines in our district.

STANISŁAW PAWŁOWSKI (1910-1992) was a Polish geophysicist and geologist. Since 1954 he was a professor of the Institute of Geology in Warsaw, since 1976 he was a member of Polish Academy of Science. In the years 1965-72 he was a Member of Parliament. For many years he was themanager of teams of geologists that were looking for natural deposits in Poland. Professor Pawłowski discovered and fully documented these deposits of Polish sulphur. It was one of the biggest geological discoveries in Poland. Work on this territory demanded unusual condition of body and soul. After years of researches and hard work he surely knew that there wassulphur on the territory of Tarnobrzeg and Sandomierz. Professor Pawłowski is not with us anymore. He will not give an interview, he will not come to any anniversary or to rest in Bojanow. He left as he lived: quietly and modestly. He was not a man for these times. He was an outstanding scientist, a tireless researcher, a discoverer, a descent man. His knowledge, credibility, honesty and, what is more, his huge work gave him a firm place in the history of science in Poland and in the whole world.
Great times of Polish sulphur will be associated with his name. And Tarnobrzeg itself, which was reborn thanks to professor Pawłowski. And one more thing – a brand mark, a logo, which made this town on the bank of the Vistula river known in the country and all over the world – sulphur, Polish gold.
