Shinto The Purification Experience
Brainstorming What specific faults or sins, in you and in your family, classes, parish, and society, need purifying? Make a list. What elements might be used in purification rituals? [Water, fire] What actions might be performed to indicate a desire for purification? [Fasting, washing] What sorts of rituals would be appropriate for purifying people of the faults and sins you just identified? [For example, if the sin is overconsumption, we could bring in things we have acquired but do not need and donate it to the poor. Then we might pour water over our hands while praying that we would consider others’ needs whenever we spend money.]
Creating the Ritual This is a ritual that would take place during class at school. What sins or faults are being purified? Keeping in mind the number of students in the class (plus the teacher), what would be each person’s role in the ritual? What would be said during the ritual? Who would say it? How would you make music a part of the ritual? Who would provide it? What materials would be needed? Where would the ritual be performed? Indoors? Outdoors? How long would it take? How does this ritual show that you are being purified of the specific sins / faults you mentioned above?
