Who is George W. Carver? Education • Studied botany at Iowa State Agricultural College in Ames • Started his academic career as a researcher and teacher • Taught in Tuskegee University in Alabama for 47 years
Why is George W. Carver important? • Did research on new uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans, and soy beans • Developed techniques to improve poor soil • Made rubber substitute and dyes and pigments • First explained crop rotations • Produced paints and stains from soybeans
How did George W. Carver Impact Society? • Developed many products we use today (ex. peanut butter, dyes, bleach, buttermilk) • Taught many students well in the science of agriculture • Saved many farms from being destroyed by introducing the concept of crop rotations that increases nutrients and prevents pests and diseases from accumulating in the soil
