2000 Living-Learning Communities (LLC) • Students with common academic or personal interests live together in a residence hall • Programming for personal and intellectual growth • Currently nine LLCs serving approximately 270 students per year
2002 • Three-credit, limited-enrollment courses taught by experienced faculty • Offered to all new freshman and transfer students • Provides personal connection experiences as well as active learning • 17 seminars per academic year • Class size limited to 20 First-Year Seminars (FYS)
2002 Expansion of Introduction to an Honors University (IHU) • One-credit seminars linked to 100/200-level courses • Focus on the integration of new students • Includes study skills, campus resources, student engagement • Adding sessions every year
2005 Chemistry Discovery Center CHEM 101/102 Reforms: • Active, small-group learning • Problem-based curriculum • Increased pass rates, including more As and Bs • CASTLE – CNMS Active Student Teaching & Learning Environment – builds on this pedagogy reform

1988 First-Year Intervention (FYI) • Faculty report on first-year students in danger of failing the course • Students receive an alert via myUMBC • 92.3% of faculty participate • Expanding beyond freshmen • Almost half of students receiving an FYI end the semester with C or better
