Agenda • Basics on the Common Core State Standards and PARCC • Previewing the PARCC Math assessments • A close look at math items for grades 4 and 9 • PARCC Transition Plan for Massachusetts
PARCC 101: The Basics PARCC is based on the Common Core State Standards, which are included in the 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for ELA/Literacy and Mathematics. The ultimate purpose of the standards and assessments is to prepare students for success after high school.
*Minnesota adopted the CCSS in ELA/literacy only 46 States + DC Have Adopted the Common Core State Standards
Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)

PARCC Comprehensive Accessibility Policies * Available to all participating students **For students with disabilities, English learners, and English learners with disabilities
PARCC’s Core Commitments to Mathematics Assessment Quality • Focus: PARCC assessments will focus strongly on where the Standards focus. Students will have more time to master concepts at a deeper level. • Problems worth doing: Multi-step problems, conceptual questions, applications, and substantial procedures will be common, as in an excellent classroom. • Better Standards Demand Better Questions: Instead of reusing existing items, PARCC will develop custom items to the Standards. • Fidelity to the Standards: PARCC Evidence Statements are rooted in the language of the Standards so that expectations remain the same in both instructional and assessment settings.
Overview of Mathematics Task Types PARCC mathematics assessments will include three types of tasks. For more information see PARCC Item Development ITN Appendix D.
