  3. Introduction The MBA Program Office and MBA Career Management Centers and International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) have structured an internship program which complies with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service’s (USCIS) definition of Curricular Practical Training.

  4. What is Curricular Practical Training? Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a form of employment authorization which allows international students to engage in practical training that is located off campus.

  5. Legal Definition: 8 CFR 214.2 (f)(10)(i) • Definition - employment that is an integral part of established curriculum. • Must be a direct link to your academic program • Must be required by the department for completion of the degree, or… • An internship for which the student receives academic credit, or… • Practica arranged cooperatively between the sponsor and Emory University • Work undertaken as part of completion of dissertation or thesis.

  6. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Part-time • No limit on duration of part-time CPT. • May work up to 20 hours/week during academic year Full-time • 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates eligibility for OPT • May work full-time during break periods

  7. What if I have multiple work opportunities? Part time: You are still limited to 20 hours a week during the semesters regardless of employment opportunities. The combination could be on and off campus or two off-campus opportunities. You can only work a combined total of 20 hours per week. Request authorization for each employer Full-time: During the summer and breaks, you can work full-time but again, you will need authorization for each form of employment.

  8. CPT – Limitations & Eligibility Limitations • Practical Training in student’s field of study • No application to USCIS required • Authorized by a Designated School Official Eligibility • Having maintained full-time status for at least one academic year (two consecutive semesters). Still pursuing a full-time program of study in current semester

  9. CPT Limitations • Limited to part-time employment during Fall and Spring semesters • Cannot be simultaneously enrolled full-time in coursework and authorized for full-time CPT • If undertaken CPT during the semester, must be enrolled in a course designated for an internship/practicum • Student must limit full-time CPT authorization if applying for optional practical training

  10. Special Note An exception to meeting the one year requirement is limited to graduate programs only. If a graduate program requires its student to engage in training prior to the completion of one full academic year, it must be documented in the MBA program curriculum and applicable to all students, not just F-1 or J-1 visa holders.
