  1. Speaking in Generalities, through my experience in NB and other regions, our local food system could be simplified as such. We have producers, use very limited and basic forms of Distribution and Processing/packaging to primarily serve direct markets and a small amount of Retail, Wholesale and F&B Industry markets. In this situation most of the risk is on the producer and the system is slowly shrinking. With this scale of system, there is no room for a viable enterprise to take on either distribution or processing and whatever is being done is usually by the producer or the final seller/consumer.   2. PRODUCERS Existing Production I want to make two major changes to our local food system. 1. I want to expand our agricultural production. I would like to not only help current producers solidify/grow their business but I want to see NB become a place where new entrants are encouraged and that agriculture is a viable career choice for locals or immigrants alike.   3. PRODUCERS Existing Production I want to make two major changes to our local food system. 2. I want to make the foods that we produce in our own region more accessible and convenient for ANY F&B INDUSTRY or ANY GROCERY Store that wants to sell it. I want to make regionally sourced an option in our tax funded institutions (huge economic multiple) and also look towards using our NB Food System to further brand our region on the world stage.   4. BEFORE this can happen at all we need to further DEVELOP our local food system. We need solid, tangible, efficient infrastructure devoted and working with both ends of the value chain. These systems can mostly be represented by development of our Distribution and Processing Capabilities in the region.   5. PRODUCERS Existing Production These changes are more difficult to make incrementally than all at once. Producers cannot scale their production without stable, assured markets and industry growth. The risk is too high, the marketing/sales requirements are too time consuming. Without their belief in long-term market development we will see very little short-term investment in growth. Distribution and Processing improvements carry significant initial investments and will need not only the revenue from larger markets but also need production to scale before they become viable. We need to develop the end “Consumption” markets in a way where there are willing partners in each category who are going to commit to regional production, who are going to work WITH the Distributers, Processors, AND Producers on PRICING, MARKETING, EFFICIENCIES AND LONG TERM SUSTAINABLE GROWTH.   8. SO, in my opinion, To Grow our Local Food System we need to… Expand / scale production Improve, invest in Distribution and Processing Infrastructure.
