Forms of reproduction • Asexual • Budding • Regeneration • Parthenogenesis • Sexual • Mating
What is asexual reproduction? • Is the reproduction of an organism without the fusion of gametes (sperm and egg) • Production of a new organism without a 2 party interaction for fertilization
Asexual reproduction • Does not require mating • Little genetic diversity in the reproduction • You usually see this in sessile invertebrates that live in constant environments • You see this form of reproduction in bacteria and other single celled organisms
Budding - The asexual process of budding can be explained a organism leaching /developing off another organism - Hydra use this form of Asexual reproduction to produce new organisms
Parthenogenesis Is the development of offspring from unfertilized eggs Females can act as males in some species Produce a hormone that can fertilize their eggs in absence/abundance of male population You see rotifers use this method to sometimes produce
regeneration • Star fish, lizards, planarians, sharks, spiders amongst many other organisms that regenerate for reproduction • Many organisms can regenerate – that is, regrow or grow new parts of their bodies to replace those that have been damaged. • http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0768606.html
What is sexual reproduction • Sexual reproduction is the production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different sexes (male and female)
Sexual reproduction • Sexual reproduction requires more use of energy than asexual reproduction • Promotes high level of genetic diversity • Crossing over and Ind. Assortment of genetic information of the male and female • Undergoes a 3 step process to fertilization
Gametogenesis • - Required for the rise of the germ cells • - Process in which diploid of cell turns • haploid for both mother and father • before fertilization • This process occurs in the gonads • Ovaries in females • Gametes are larger and sessile • Testes in males • Gametes are small and motile
Steps of fertilization (Sexual) • Gametogenesis • Involves a special type of cell division called meiosis • Process of genetic material from the parents being cut in half • Mating • The pairing of the opposite sex for copulation • Copulation is the union of the sex organs of two sexually reproducing animals for insemination and fertilization • Fertilization • The union of haploid egg and sperm in production of a zygote, or fertilized egg
Meiosis http://www.neok12.com/Reproductive-System.htm
Compare and contrast Asexual Sexual • Requires the union of 2 individuals to produce offspring (male & female) • Wide range of genetic variation in offspring • Only mammals use this form of reproduction • Only requires 1 parent to produce offspring • Little genetic diversity seen in daughter organisms • Only bacteria and single celled organisms use this
