What modifications can be made to the social environment to support the health and wellbeing of young people?
The big change … technology Young people 15 -17 years old: Over 94% accessed the internet in last 12 months Increase from 83% in previous 12 months 66% use the internet at least daily How are they using it? 40% say they can’t live without the internet Most common activities are games, homework and downloading music Emergence of social networking and user-generated content sites E.g. Myspace, Youtube, Facebook
Where do young people turn for advice and support? Mission Australia, 2008 Internet preferred to telephone helpline (3-6 times), teachers (2-6 times), school counsellors (2-5 times), community agencies/youth workers (2 times), doctors/ministers (2 times)

About Reach Out... Objectives: Promotepositive mental health by increase help-seeking, coping, problem solving skills, and reduce stigma Reduce youth suicide rates Who is it for? 14 – 25 year olds going through a tough time, or supporting a friend or relative through a tough time
About Reach Out... Why do young people use it? Anonymous and confidential– no one has to know you’re using it Is available24/7 Reach Out knows what it is talking about – all info is written in consultation with experts Reach Out is real and relevant – a broad community of youth ambassadors make sure of that
The Impact … Service effectiveness • 73% of users will return to RO when going through a tough time • 76% report improved mental health literacy • 59% of users have spoken to MH professional after visiting RO Social Contribution • Suicide rates are down 57% since 1997 (ABS, 2009)
