  3. Connectivity at UVa • 5 year rewiring project began in 1992 • first 2 years put fiber to all buildings • next 3 years rewired all buildings • Cat 5 twisted pair plus coax for cable video • wallplates provide voice, data, and video • backbone recently upgraded to OC-12 ATM (622 Mbps) • building-level networks moving from shared 10 Mbps to switched 10/100 Mbps

  4. The RIC GigaPOP • Distributed gigaPOP based on Network Virginia • Network Virginia (NWV) is a statewide ATM network • UVa, VT, and ODU each received NSF Connections grants for the initial vBNS connection • Operational since August, 1997 • http://www.networkvirginia.net

  5. The Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) • MetaPOP that will serve as an aggregation and exchange point for advanced network services • Participants • RIC • WREN • Maryland GigaPOP • SURA • Bell Atlantic • GTE • Will connect to Project Abilene • http://www.networkvirginia.net/MAX

Legion: Worldwide Virtual Computer • Multimillion dollar R&D project in the Computer Science department • Provide the illusion of a single virtual computer • Encompass computers ranging from workstations to supercomputers located anywhere in the world • A key enabling technology: high bandwidth networks with advanced services • Technology partner in NPACI (led by SDSC) • http://legion.virginia.edu

  7. Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities • Supports research in the Arts and Humanities using state-of-the-art technology • Fellows are given extensive technology support; both equipment and technical professionals • Has supported several dozen fellows (at various levels) over the past 5 years • Projects tend to have extensive multimedia requirements • Advanced software applications developed • http://www.iath.virginia.edu
