Why Read the Newspaper? • To Inform readers through news articles • To Entertain through feature stories, humor columns, comics, puzzles, and more • To Interpret and Persuade through editorials and opinion columns • To Serve through ads and other information that helps readers with business, recreation, and daily life.
When you read the same paper on a daily basis, you become familiar with the layout and features. You develop your own approach to reading the paper. You will find that much of the same type of information and regular features are located in the same place in the paper every day. Newspapers are organized into sections, labeled by section and name. The name indicates the type of information found within the section. What are the names of sections in today’s Free Lance–Star? (The A section, often called the front section, does not have a name.)
The Front Page Flag – title (name) of the newspaper Byline – reporter’s name Cutline/Caption – identifying information that appears under photos or illustrations Dateline –locationfrom which story is submitted; if none appears, story is of local origin Headline – large type above a story stating main idea Index – table of contents listed by topic and section and page Jumpline – tells reader where story is continued Lead – the first few sentences of a news story, usually answering all or most of the 5W questions Rail – column down left side of page that highlights stories inside Top Story – story with the biggest headline, considered by editors to be the most important news of the day Power Head: – the biggest, boldest headline, indicating the story editors consider to be the most important news of the day
