  2. EL stock from Sudeten, Czech republic; • JL stock from Nagano, Japan. • We try to source seed from GB-registered EL and JL seed stands regardless of origin. • The breeders objective has been to create the hybrid between European (EL) and Japanese Larch (JL). • HL thought to achieve the growth rate and canker resistance of JL and the form of EL. • Timber is highly valued for cladding (outer covering) of buildings and fencing material.

  3. Plus tree selection started in early 1960s • 500 EL and 300 JL • Progeny testing of 300 or so HL families continued until mid-1990s • 43 reliable progeny tests gave data out of 72 planted • Re-selection of best EL and JL parents based on 10-year height and stem straightness • Now have a breeding population of 100 EL and 50 JL

  4. There were 4 HL seed orchards • Now collection is JL(HL) and EL(HL) • Approx. 60% HL when collecting from EL mothers; 15% from JL mothers • No test for hybridity used • No tissue culture or vegetative propagation programme • No plans for further breeding • There is now increasing interest in Larch in GB • We would ideally like to be able to mass produce selected 100% HL families for deployment • We would like to develop SE/cryo of HL.

  5. Predicted gains from (i) HL seed orchard when collecting from JL parent trees - JL(HL) and (ii) HL families produced via controlled pollination and vegetative propagation.
