Inside the Trojan Horse Helen (Menelaus’ Wife) with Paris EXAMPLE:Menelaus,King of Sparta Regal Attire (King of Sparta) Menelaus was the King of Sparta and a friend of Odysseus. His wife, Helen, ran off with Paris when Menelaus was at a funeral. Menelaus gathered all the kings of Greece and they declared war on the city of Troy. They fought for 10 years, then Odysseus thought up a brilliant idea—to build a giant wooden horse, hide in it, and offer it as a gift to the Trojans. The Greeks waited until night, then jumped out of the horse, killed all the Trojans and got Helen back. In Book IV of The Odyssey, Telemachus goes to Sparta to ask Menelaus if he has heard anything about Odysseus. Menelaus is very hospitable to Telemachus and tells him his father is stuck on an island. This is the first time that Telemachus receives news that his father is alive. Banquet for Telemachus (Greek Hospitality)
