What is a Fuel Cell? • -A fuel cell converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity. • -In other words a fuel cell can be considered a conversion device. • -The converted energy can be used to power different devices and cars. • -Fuel cells were first introduced by Ford in 2004 for a car.
How they work ? • -With a fuel cell, chemicals constantly flow into the cell so it never goes dead. As long as there is a flow of chemicals into the cell, the electricity flows out of the cell. Most fuel cells in use today use hydrogen and oxygen as the chemicals. This is a picture of a battery of a fuel cell stack that could power an automobile
Pros • -Fuel cell cars reduce the amount of pollution put into the air. Since the fuel celled car will be powered with any abundant resource then it will cause less pollution. • -Hydrogen is abundant and it won’t run out for a long time. • -The fuel cell cars will be energy efficient meaning that it will be less expensive and that it will be more useful.
Cons • -The fuel cell cars only convert about 80 % of the energy it had stored. It’s not bad if your driving a mile, but over time you may lose plenty of energy. • -hydrogen is very hard to store in cars and it is hard to distribute around the world. • -when hydrogen isn’t stored correctly then it is not pure and it isn’t efficient
Conclusion Overall, fuel cell cars are more expensive, but they run on an abundant resource. They will save money and will be able to save the atmosphere from pollution. Unfortunately, hydrogen and oxygen are hard to distribute around the world because this isn’t a very popular idea in some places of the world. Fuel cell cars will save the environment and will make traveling easier.
