  1. The Sheldon K. Friedlander Award American Association for Aerosol Research

  2. This award honors professor Sheldon Friedlander for his leadership as a researcher, teacher, and pioneer in aerosol science. The Sheldon K. Friedlander Award “recognizes an outstanding dissertation by an individual who has earned a doctoral degree. The dissertation can be in any discipline in the physical, biomedical, or engineering sciences but has to be in a field of aerosol science and technology”.

  3. 2010 Co-Recipient of the Sheldon K. Friedlander Award • Nga (Sally) Ng, Ph.D. • Scientist, Aerodyne Research Inc. • Nominated by Prof. John Seifeld and Richard C. Flagan, Ph.D. thesis advisors at Caltech • Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, Caltech, 2007 • Author of 29 journal papers • Ph.D. thesis title: “Chamber Studies of Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation,” • “ ...effect of multiple generation of reaction on SOA formation when atmospheric hydrocarbons undergo oxidation by OH radicals, ozone, or nitrate radicals to give products of much less volatility, which condense to form aerosol. • “.. (with Carnegie Mellon group) determined the profound importance of the NOx level on the formation of SOA... in particular for smaller hydrocarbon...” • “…The impact of Sally’s publication is truly remarkable... an intellectual bulldog....”

  4. 2010 Co-Recipient of the Sheldon K. Friedlander Award • Ilona Riipinen, Ph.D. • Research Fellow, Carnegie Mellon University • Nominated by Dr. Douglas R. Worsnop, • Prof. Markku Kulmala and Kari E. J. Lehtinen as thesis advisor at the University of Helsinki, Finland • Ph.D., Physics, University of Helsinki, 2008 • Ph.D. thesis title: “Observations on the First Steps of Atmospheric Particle Formation and Growth” • Author of 44 journal papers • “investigated in-situ formation of new particles in the atmosphere combining field measurements with theoretical models and laboratory experiments.. A beautiful demonstration of the importance of both sulphuric acid and biogenic organics in the formation and growth of new particles in the boreal forest region.” • “… Ilona’s work exemplifies the interdisciplinary nature of atmospheric aerosol science....” • “...as an emerging world class researcher in aerosol science...”
