  2. Addition – Same Signs(+ or -) • Add the numbers • Keep the sign • Answer is the same sign as the numbers 1

  3. Examples 1.) 10 + 6 = 2.) 5 + 4 = 3.) -3 + (-4) = 4.) -8 + (-1) = 1

  4. Addition – Different Signs(+ or -) • Subtract the smaller number from the bigger number • Keep the sign of the bigger number • Answer is the same sign as the bigger number 2

  5. Examples 1.) 10 + (-3) = 2.) -3 + 5 = 3.) -9 + 4 = 4.) -6 + 3 = 2

  6. Subtraction – Different Signs(+ or -)K.I.O. – Keep, Inverse Operation, Opposite Number • Keep the first number • Change subtraction to addition (inverse operation) • Change the sign of the second number to its opposite number • Then follow the addition rules 3 and 4

  7. Examples • 5 - (-4) = KIO • -8 - 2 = KIO • -3 - (-4) = KIO • -7 – (-1) = KIO 3 and 4

  8. Multiplication - Same Sign (+ or -) • When multiplying two numbers with the same sign (+ or -), the answer is always “Positive” 5

  9. Examples • 2 · 4 = 8 • 5 · 4= 20 • -3 · -7 = 21 • -8 · -6 = 48 5

  10. Multiplication – Different Signs • When multiplying two numbers with different signs, the answer is always “Negative” 6

  11. Examples • 5 · -6 = -30 • -9 · 5 = -45 • -3 · 8 = -24 • 7 · -2 = -14 6

  12. Division - Same Sign (+ or -) • When dividing two numbers with the same sign (+ or -), the answer is always “Positive” 7

  13. Examples • 20 ÷ 4 = 5 • 6÷ 3 = 2 • -24 ÷ -3 = 8 • -42 ÷ -6 = 7 7

  14. Division – Different Signs • When dividing two numbers with different signs, the answer is always “Negative” 8

  15. Examples • 24 ÷ -4 = -6 • 50 ÷ -10 = -5 • -14 ÷ 2 = -7 • -36 ÷ 3 = -12 8
