What is Technology Planning? • The process of researching, acquiring, & implementing technology for your organization.
Needs Assessment • What do you need, not what do I want. • What is your budget? • Is this need mission critical? • What is the organizations timeline? • What staff will lead the project? • What technical expertise must be acquired to fund implement this project.
Needs Assessment II: The future • Can it handle future organizational growth? • How long of a life span do you need? • Is it a permanent or temporary solution? • What can you afford for the T.C.O. (Total Cost of Ownership? • What are upgrade costs and additional training?
Research • Get familiar with the products. • Get familiar with the companies that make the products. • Get familiar the tiers of the product. • Find “industry” sites. Example • Get brochures and feature lists for vendors.
Research • Assess all products that fit your needs • Eliminate products below your needs • Eliminate products above your budget • Find reviews of products. Pay for them if necessary. • Find reviews from multiple sources • If possible demo products • Find out operational skills needed to operate any new technology

Acquiring Technology • Shop around • Ask for a non-profit discounts • Pit sellers against one another • Start a price war if possible • Do not be afraid to walk away.
Implementation • Get as much training as possible • Get help from other Techies’ or consultants • Create policies for use • Take your time!! • Train other staff on use • Implementation times vary with different types of technology.
