Welcome to the 5th US / Japan Workshop on Laser IFEMarch 21-22, 2005San Diego, CA Co-hosted by General Atomics Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory University of California, San Diego
5th US/Japan Workshop on Laser IFEreturns to San Diego • 1st was held in San Diego in May 1998 • 2nd in Osaka, November 1999 • 3rd in Livermore, January 2001 • 4th in Osaka, March 2003(?) • Other related US/Japan workshops have evolved • Fast Ignition • Target Fabrication and Injection US/Japan Workshop March-05
Much progress and many changes have occurred since 1st Workshop • We will hear about the latest developments at this workshop • R&D in Japan is primarily focused on FI approach • In US, laser IFE R&D is conducted under the High Average Power Laser (HAPL) Program with focus on direct-drive targets, dry-wall chambers and either KrF or DPSSL driver • Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) work is now focused on HEDP, including fast ignition, with future applications to IFE US/Japan Workshop March-05
Basic objectives of this Workshop remain the same • Share information on progress and challenges faced in developing IFE • Identify areas where continued (or new) collaborations between US and Japan scientists and engineers will be beneficial US/Japan Workshop March-05
