Bible Study of Jude Jude – The Half-Brother of Jesus Reminds Us, “We Serve our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ” Pastor David Nehrenz Trinity Lutheran Church Norman, OK. Date: 8-5-18 Lesson: 5
A. TEXT (14) It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones, (15) to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him." (16) These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.
Notes: 1. The quote comes from the apocryphal book of 1 Enoch, which appeared in the first century B.C. and was a respected and popular book in the New Testament era. Much historical information can be gleaned from the apocryphal books. • 2. The Bible assumes that: the genealogies in Genesis are true, accurate and historical, we all are descendants of Adam and Eve, the whole human race today descends from the three sons of Noah after the Flood, the languages were confused at the Tower of Babel, the nations then spread all around the globe, and Pentecost reverses the Tower of Babel. ALL of modern man’s questions are answered in Genesis, if the world would simply take the Bible at face value and not try to question it! • 3. The Messianic line, from which Jesus came, after Cain killed Abel and was cursed, then began with Adam and Eve’s other son Seth, from whom would come: SETH - NOAH – SHEM – ABRAHAM – ISAAC – JACOB – JUDAH – JESSE – DAVID, JOSEPH and MARY - JESUS
This is the Enoch from the line of Seth (Gen 4:25-5:17), not the line of Cain: ENOCH: (Gen 5:18-24) He walked with God like Noah (Gen 6:9), He like Elijah was taken away (2 Ki 2:9-12); Ps 49:15; 73:24; Heb 11:5;Other references for vv. 14-16:(Lev 19:15; Dt. 10:17; 33:2; 1 Chr 1:1-13; Dan 4:13-17; 7:9-14; Ps 17:10; 94:4; Zech 14:1-5; Mt 12:36; 16:27; 25:32; Mk 8:38; Jn 6:60; 1 Cor 10:10; 1 Tim 1:9; 1 Th 3:13; 2 Th 1:6-10; Heb 12:22; 2 Pet 2:5-10, 18)
THE LIFE APPLICATION- 1. Since the Lord on the Last Day will come with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness, how does our faith in Jesus Christ’s righteousness assure us that we will be saved and brought to heaven? 2. Where do we see grumblers and malcontents, who following their own sinful desires; are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage? 3. When does our knowledge of God’s Word make a difference, as we are faced by evolution, atheism, moral relativism, and unbelief in the authority of the Old and New Testament?
