Explore various options for calibrating fiducial volume and ring counting in neutrino event analysis to address systematic errors. Discuss methods like dividing tanks, sinking boxes, and using scintillating fibers. Propose using fake Cherenkov-light generators for calibration and compare systems in different detectors.

Dominant systematic errors • Fiducial volume (vertex fitter) • in nm disappearance analysis • the number of n events is important • Ring counting • in ne appearance search • the number of BG events to ne signals, 1ring p0 events, strongly depends on the ring counting.
Fiducial volume • Calibration source : n events ? cosmic m events ? cosmic m n Cosmic m events have different event topologies from those of neutrino events. difficult to use
Fiducial volume calib. (option1) • dividing the tank into two parts • Merit : high event rate • Demerit : how to set the curtain ? how about a light shield ? can not limit the vertex in X and Y direction. (also in Z direction ???) Black curtain
Fiducial volume calib. (option2) • sinking a box surrounded by scintillators • merits : can limit the vertex Z position precisely. easy to handle (insert from top of the tank). • demerits : very low event rate. 10 events / day ? 1m x 1m x 1m veto veto veto muon veto veto
Fiducial volume calib. (others) • Can we use scintillating fibers to determine the vertex ???
Ring counting • Not easy … • Using fake Cherenkov-light generators is one and only possibility I can imagine at the present moment. • Use the same system in 2km and SK. compare their responses diffuser cone ? light source want to produce a fake e-like ring
Summary • We have no concrete proposals yet for calibrations of fiducial volume and ring counting. • We need more ideas !!
