Plants-General information

Plants probably evolved from algae, showcasing an alternation of generations with distinct life cycle phases. The first land plants developed a cuticle - a waxy, waterproof layer that prevents drying out. Plants are categorized into nonvascular and vascular types based on the presence of specialized tissue for water transport. Vascular plants, which make up 90% of modern plants, can inhabit drier areas due to their ability to absorb water through roots. Reproduction in vascular plants involves spores or seeds, with the latter developing within structures like flowers. Examples include gymnosperms and angiosperms, with monocots and dicots as subcategories.

  1. Plants-General information

  2. *Plants probably evolved from algae. *There is an alternation of generations-meaning 2 phases in life cycle. *1st land plants had to be able to survive harsh conditions-thus they developed a ____________________-waxy,waterproof layer that coats the parts of plant exposed to air---helps keep it from drying out Cuticle

  3. 2 categories of plants:refers to presence or absence of ____________-tissue --specialized for the long distance transport of water and solutes through a plant • Nonvascular-mosses,liverworts----more dependent on ample water/no true roots, leaves or stems, but have structures for similar functions--____________ Vascular tissue rhizoids

  4. Guard cells • Vascular plants - 90 % of modern plants---absorb water through roots----therefore can inhabit dryer areas than nonvascular • -________________control the size of pores on plants and balance the movement of CO2 into leaf w/outgoing water

  5. Reproduction,in general Vascular plants-spores or _______-protective structure that contain a plant embryo and stored food-results from sexual reproduction and form after sperm and egg unite ----_________structure that develops in plants w/flowers and contains the seeds ---wind,animals help diperse seed as well as “wing-like structures on seeds seed fruit

  6. classification

  7. _______________-vascular plants producing seeds and lacking a fruit-eg. Conifers _______________-vascular plants that produce seeds enclosed and protected by fruit gymnosperms angiosperms

  8. _________________--angiosperm w/ one cotyledon _________________--- angiosperm w/ 2 cotyledons dicots monocots
