Close-Up Textures By Hannah P.
Aaron Siskind Siskind uses a short depth of field to show the layers of peeling paint The black and white shows contrast between the paint and the wall underneath it. I like how simple and abstract the textures in his compositions become when photographed straight on. His photographs bring significance to things that may appear run down and neglected.
Aaron Siskind • Born in New York in 1903 • Documentarian in the NY Photo League in 1932 • Hand-held twin-lens reflex camera • Photographs of architecture • Died in 1991
“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.” -Aaron Siskind
San Luis Potosi 16 1961 Contrast with black letters and light paper
Chicago 1938 Sense of depth from the peeling layers of paint
New York 86 1986 High contrast between white paper in the middle and the black surrounding it
Jalapa 66 Part of a homage to Franz Kline, picture taken while Siskind drove through Mexico
Artist Statement • My theme is close up textures. I chose this theme so small, overlooked details could be noticed. • By shooting with a small depth of field, I am able to highlight the texture on the wall. I shot from different angles to get varied perspectives of the peeling paint. I also cropped my last picture to create better composition. • When people view my photographs, I hope that they notice the interesting textures that can be found in areas or things that may have been abandoned or forgotten.
