  8. Population Pyramids: SWBAT: use a population pyramid to determine information about different communities. SWBAT define growth rate as birth rate minus death rate. SWBAT read and interpret charts and graphs showing life expectancy and growth rate.

  9. What is a population pyramid? • Population Pyramid: A diagram that shows the ages of all the men and women in a population. • Population pyramids show population distribution • How many males • How many females • How many people in different age groups

  10. Parts of the pyramid • Title: Where and when is the data from? • Male: Population by age • Female: Population by age • Total population in an age group is male side plus female side

  11. How To Read A Population Pyramid: • Read the Title: What Region/Country/City are we looking at? Which year? • Look to see what age group is the largest and smallest in each category (male and female).

  12. Trends in Pop. Pyramids: Growing Pyramid • If a country’s population is growing, the pyramid will be large at the bottom. This shows there are a large number of children and young people. • High birthrate! • It will look like a TRIANGLE

  13. Trends in Pop. Pyramids: Declining Beehive • If a country’s population is declining, the pyramid will be narrow at the bottom and wider in the middle. This shows there are a large number of older people and not as many children. • It will look like a beehive.

  14. Trends in Pop. Pyramids: Stable Rectangle • If a country’s population is stable, the pyramid will have similar bars through out. Showing similar populations in all age groups. • It will look like a rectangle
