  1. Sentiment Classification using LM and Sentence Information Sunil Khanal sukhanal@stanford.edu CS224N Final Project Spring 2010

  2. Product Reviews Movies Fine matching speakers Perfect book shelf speakers for a small room / bed room Denon SC-CX303= Fun Listening • We’ve got used to point-and-shoot cameras being slimline but the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 is a little chunkier at 22mm at its thinnest point and 28mm across its belly. At 174g, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 is also heavier than, say, Sony’s waiflike T77, and the same weight as the Fuji F200 we’ve recently reviewed. • Heavy noise reduction smudges fine details and gives images a soft, fuzzy look, even at low ISOs; Redeye and purple fringing are problems; LCD lags behind the action in burst mode; Not enough steps in zoom range, which makes precise adjustments difficult; Weak flash; Lens retracts way too quickly when you switch to playback mode • Even though the Sony Cybershot W290 is not a blockbuster, revolutionary camera, Sony has done all they can to make it interesting, with some success. The unassuming ultracompact is outfitted with an array of appealing features that definitely make it attractive to consumers who want the best… • The year's most ambitious film is so breathtaking, it detracts you from the fact that Cameron's characters are caricatures, and too much of the dialogue is stock. The good news? None of it matters • a big, dumb movie built to make money but hardly worthy of serious examination. Avatar isn't only critic-proof, it resists serious criticism. You might as well analyze a beach ball • It's the experience, more than the story, that's worth celebrating here. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/avatar/ http://www.amazon.com http://review.techworld.com/

  3. Unigram Language Model with Naïve Bayes does most of the work I believe that this film is the best story ever told on film, and I'm about to tell you why. ……I was so impressed with how every single subplot was given a great deal of respect and attention from the director. The acting was world-class. I have never seen Tim Robbins act as well since, Morgan Freeman maybe (e.g. Seven). The twists were unexpected, an although this film had a familiar feel, it wasn't even slightly pretentious or clichéd, it was original. The cinematography was grand and expressive. It gave a real impression of the sheer magnitude of this daunting prison. …….Thoroughlyrecommended. http://www.cs.cornell.edu/home/llee/papers/sentiment.pdf

  4. Improvement Approach • Classify sentences in the review into negative and positive (Sentence classifier trained using Naïve Bayes) • Each sentence votes for a class, different sentences have different weights • Stemmer • Use Negation Tagging

  5. Improvements using weighted sentence voting, sentence position information, negation tagging, etc. a movie that's been as highly built up as the Truman show , with reviews boasting , " the film of the decade ! " and " a breakthrough ! " can only be leading up to letdown . that's no doubt -- it seems any movie with critical acclaim …… so , naturally , the Truman show was building up to what was going to be a disappointment . and I convinced myself , as I nestled into my uncomfortable movie theater chair , actually to try not to enjoy it . let me tell you , that is an impossibility . the Truman show is truly " the film of the decade " and " a breakthrough " and more . and you will come out changed…… find yourself feeling everything that the character is feeling , and this , friends , is it …. Truman show's " run , but tackle it does , and perfectly .…, you get the sense that you are viewing a * real * prime-time hit . and the way the camera constantly takes the forms it would in the " real " Truman show is clever and well-done . people , rejoice ! Sentence Weighting Scheme

  6. Examples on of my colleague was surprised when I told her I was willing to see Betsy's wedding . and she was shocked to hear that I actually liked it . her reaction was understandable when you consider that the film revolves around molly ringwald , who hasn't made a worthwhile film since 1986 . but the fact is , Betsy's wedding is also an Alan Alda film . and while ringwald has been making duds for the last four years , Alda has been involved with several noteworthy projects , including crime and misdemeanors and a new life . as a filmmaker , Alda's style of humor is remarkably restrained and tasteful . and while he doesn't have the comic genius of a Woody Allen , Alda doe possess the inspiration to make movie which are ten time more entertaining than the slop which usually pass for comedy . Classified correctly as positive you've got mail works a lot better than it deserves to . no real acting was involved and there is not an original or inventive bone in it's body … essentially , it goes against and defies all concepts of good contemporary filmmaking . it's overly sentimental and at time terribly mushy , not to mention very manipulative …. but oh , how enjoyable that manipulation is …. I haven't quite yet figured out what I liked so much about you've got mail , but then again , is that really important ? if you like something so much , why even question it ?.... sure , there are some mildly interesting subplots , but they all fail in comparison to the utter cuteness of the main relationship . all of this , of course , leads up to the predictable climax .but as foreseeable as the ending is , it's so damn cute and well-done that I doubt any movie in the entire year contains a scene the evokes as much pure joy as this part doe … i was filled with such , for lack of a better word , happiness that for the first time all year , i actually left the theater smiling . Classified incorrectly as negative
