TOB meeting 14 July 2005 , Antti Onnela:Completion of the TOB mechanics Ready: All Rod Frames The Wheel Structure Still to be completed: Inner Rails, Services Supports, Cooling Manifolds … and the final TOB integration!
Beams Tracker Outer Barrel (TOB) 700 kg total own mass + 300 kg supported (TIB + TID + Pixel) = total ~ 1000 kg
TOB Rod • 4128 R--detectors • Strips aligned parallel to the beam-line • 1800 Stereo-detectors • Similar sensors rotated by 100 mrad
TOB Rods Final quantity: 753 rod frames made = 688 + 65 spares 113 pieces / rod frame85089 pieces in total ! Start of preliminary design of the TOB: July 1999 First call for tender for main components: October 2001 Last rod frame assembled and tested: May 2005
TOB Rod carbon-fiber profiles Pultrusion
TOB Rod carbon-fiber profiles Water-jet cutting
TOB Rod measurements 24 module supports / rod 12 positioning pins / rod Rod supported from its 4 spheres like in the final TOB wheel
Rod supported from the spheres (a,b,c,d) • Detector support inserts (e.g. 61, 62, 63, and 64) define parallel planes on which the detectors are mounted • Positioning pins (e.g. 65, and 66) define module position and orientation on the XZ-plane

Rod frame production – The Magic Formula Successful component production in industry, using specialized industrial methods, which were proven to work during the MSGC Barrel project. (Biggest remaining uncertainties were related to the CERN procurement rules, but we were lucky…) Harri Katajisto & Jarmo Kortesmaa & Auli Kuronen + 85089 components + custom-made tooling + epoxy glue + 2 years of patient precision work and quality control = 753 high-quality rod frames ready for use in the Tracker! CONGRATULATIONS to ALL PARTICIPANTS!
TOB Wheel: Gravitational loads Fully loaded, inclined TOB: Displacements < 0.5 mm expected. For rods – max. displacement ~ 0.1 mm
TOB Wheel Assembly Measurements with theodolites, photogrammetry, slide calipers, and rulers: Wheel is correct in shape (better than 0.2 mm)
TOB Wheel Assembly Geometry unchanged (within 0.15 mm) after rotation from the vertical to horizontal position and on to the final supports.
