This study targets network operators, aiming to lower complexities and optimize operations for machine-type communication services. 3GPP2 M2M • This study will include the following study targets: • Provide network operators with lower operational complexities when offering machine-type communication services • Reduce the impact and effort of handling large machine-type communication groups • Optimize network operations to minimize impact on device battery power usage • Stimulate new machine-type communication applications by enabling operators to offer services tailored to machine-type communication requirements • This study of M2M Communication will identify enhancements to support a machine-type data communication service, not specific M2M applications, and will include enhancements of the radio and network interfaces.
3GPP2 M2M Overview • M2M Communication study will consider the benefits of mobile communication to a data communication service that does not require human interaction [known as Machine Type Communication]. • M2M Communication allows timely adjustments to remote equipment in sparsely populated areas. M2M may also be applied to consumer-oriented services to allow triggers to adjust settings for remote appliances and personal equipment in order to enhance consumer convenience, and as part of a broader green strategy to improve energy efficiencies for individual users. 3GPP2 M2M Target Scenarios for M2M Communication Services • Positive Impact of M2M Communication Services on Network Operational Complexities Improved Management of M2M Communication Groups • M2M Service subscribers will be able to assign multiple devices that can be managed on an individual or group basis • Utilization of a broadcast message for the purpose of controlling the grouped M2M devices or alerting such devices Optimized Network and Terminal Operations to Reduce Battery Power Usage Benefit to Offer M2M Communication Services • To reduce power consumption levels, an M2M device may want to schedule periodic network-initiated messaging in support of an application so that the device itself can maintain a known sleep cycle for longer periods of time
3GPP2 M2M Interface Enhancements to Support M2M Communication Services 3GPP2 Architecture Enhancements • Communication Model • The M2M applications use the client-sever communication model for the M2M terminals to communicate with the M2M application servers on the network. • A M2M Client resides in a M2M terminal, while the M2M Server is on the operators’ Core network. • M2M Communication Adaptation Protocol • The M2M applications might utilize different ways of communications, such as fixed wire network, WiFi, etc, whenever they are available and capable.
3GPP2 M2M Interface Enhancements to Support M2M Communication Services 3GPP2 Architecture Enhancements • New M2M Terminal Class • Introducing new M2M terminal classes would help to separate M2M terminals from existing CDMA mobile stations. • With those new M2M terminal classes, the optimization would be applicable to the particular M2M terminals without impact existing mobile stations. • New classes would also help to distinguish M2M applications.
