3/05/09 (pm) - Series on Philippians - Sermon 3 United! Phil. 1:1; Eph. 1:3-14 Theme: The Christian is united to Jesus Christ.
Phillipians is addressed to the saints in Christ Jesus(1:1c). The term in Christ or similar is used approximately 150 times by Paul. It embodies glorious theology. It speaks of the Christian’s union with the Lord Jesus Christ.
A Neglected Doctrine? The subject of spiritual union is the most important, the most profound, and yet the most blessed that is set forth in the sacred Scriptures; and yet, sad to say, there is hardly any which is more generally neglected. The very expression ‘spiritual union’ is unknown in most professing Christian circles, and even where it is employed it is given such a protracted meaning as to take in only a fragment of this precious truth. 1. When does union with Jesus Christ take place? Logically – from eternity past (cf. Eph. 1:3-4) Chronologically– the moment a person is born-again.
You must be united to the Source before you receive salvation’s benefits from the Source.
2. What is the nature of a Christian’s union with Jesus Christ? Not nirvana – being gradually absorbed into the divine! It is a spiritual union (cf.1 Cor. 6:17ESV).
It is a mystical union, cf. Eph. 5:31-32. …it so far transcends all the analogies of earthly relationships, in the intimacy of its connection, in the transforming power of its influence, and in the excellencies of its consequences. (Hodge, in Berkhof, Systematic, p. 449)
It is a vital union (cf.Jn. 14:19). It is an organic union (cf.Eph. 4:15-16). It is a personal union (Jn. 15:5). It is an indissoluble union (Rom. 8:38-39).
3. What are the consequences of union with Jesus Christ? • Objective Results (outside the realm of the Christian’s felt experience):
Christ becomes a Christian’s newfederalrepresentative, cf. Rom. 5:19; 1 Cor. 15:22) • justification(cf. Rom. 3:24) • sanctification(cf. 1 Cor. 1:2) • adoption(cf. Eph. 1:5) • an heir(cf.Rom. 8:17)
B. Subjective Results (within the realm of the Christian’s experience):
spiritual life(cf.Eph. 2:5) • conversion • progressive sanctification (cf. Rom. 8:29; Jn. 15; Gal. 5:22-23) • perseverance(cf. Jn. 10:28-29) • glorification(cf. Rom. 8:30)
Conclusion – A Glorious Doctrine Union with Christ is that intimate, vital and spiritual union between Christ and His people, in virtue of which He is the Source of their life and strength, of their blessedness and salvation.
We could not pass over Paul’s words in Christ Jesus! Meditate much on this doctrine and let that lead to inevitable praise.
