There on the Day of Atonement (Lev. 16:1-20) the high priest sprinkled blood on the lid (…“covering”). The blood then covered (…“made atonement for”…) Israel’s sin. Christ: Our Mercy Seat (Propitiation) • Hebrews 2:17 - “Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” • Hebrews 9:6-8, 11-12 - “Now when these things had been thus prepared, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people’s sins committed in ignorance; the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. …But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.
