  1. Text Features IDOE Standard 8.2.1- Compare and contrast the features and elements of consumer materials to gain meaning from documents.

  2. Why?! Features help you to understand how an informational text is organized! Cool, huh? 

  3. The Text Body: This is your main body of information where you elaborate your title and subtitles.

  4. Headings/Titles: This tells you what topic is about to be discussed. Headings and titles often give you the main ideas of the informational text.

  5. Subtitles/Subheadings These separate the main text into smaller chunks of information. They help make information easier to locate.

  6. Sidebars These short bits of text are usually boxed and separated from the main text. Sidebars give additional information.

  7. Visual Features of Informational Text

  8. Timelines: A visual way to organize information in chronological order.

  9. Graphs: Show bits of information and how they relate to one another.

  10. Diagrams: Drawings that give a simpler view of complex information.

  11. Pictures/Images: Sometimes you just need a picture or photograph to draw in your audience and help illustrate the topic the article discusses.
